Gambling ban registry to appear in the Baltics

According to Latvian media, politicians in the Baltics are developing guidelines to mitigate the risks associated with gambling and lotteries. This project is planned to be gradually implemented between 2021 and 2027.

A study by the Latvian Ministry of Health estimated that about 70,000 people, or 6% of the population, have problems with gambling addiction. Since January 2020, a "registry of selfless persons" has been reportedly established in the country. It was based on 14,620 applications from citizens who want to get rid of the manifestations of gambling addiction. The voluntary scheme blocks their access to gambling halls and casinos both in the land-based sector and on the Internet. The initiators of the program note that this feature allows people with compulsive or addictive behavior to avoid repeating past mistakes.

Signe Byrne, head of the Latvian Lottery and Gambling Supervision Inspectorate, said that two to five cancellation requests are received every day. But you can again allow yourself to participate in gambling only 12 months after the entry into force of restrictive measures.

The department noted that they are striving to improve their gambling policy in the coming years. To this end, the possibility of introducing in the Baltic States a common register of persons who will be banned from visiting land-based gambling establishments and online casinos is currently being discussed.

The press secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Finance Olga Bogdanova said: “Negotiations have already begun with neighboring countries on the establishment of a joint registry.”

The current guidelines through 2027 include 47 risk mitigation measures associated with gambling and lotteries. It is planned that the age of players can be raised to 21 years. In addition, the authorities plan to ban round-the-clock operation of casinos and slot machine halls. Also, from May 1, 2021, Latvian citizens with child support arrears will be prohibited from gambling.

Recall that MGM Resorts and BetMGMwill start fight against gambling addiction.
