Swedish Gambling Operators Demand Clarification on Operation of Deposit Limits

The Swedish gambling industry has demanded clarification on new deposit limits from the National Gaming Inspectorate, claiming that time constraints created "chaos". Gustaf Hoffstedt, general secretary of the Swedish Online Gambling Trade Association, said the National Gaming Inspectorate should issue a guide for licensees detailing how the €459 weekly limit should apply.
Gambling companies interpreted the new rules in completely different ways. Some of them included sports betting in the list of restrictions, despite the fact that this type of gambling entertainment is not included in the directive of the Minister of Social Security.
Hoffstedt stated: “Now the main task of the National Gaming Inspectorate is to quickly clarify the issue of restrictions on deposits. We are in a situation where neither private nor public companies understand how to act. Different entities interpret the new regulation in different ways. The question is, who really benefits from this, other than companies that are outside the licensing system?
Most gambling lawyers I've spoken to are of the opinion that the regulation doesn't work and is badly written. This leads to misinterpretation. Measures that are not based on facts can lead to an aggravation of the situation for both licensed companies and their clients.”
Recall that on July 2came into force Mandatory weekly deposit limit of €459 and bonus offer cap of €9.63. This was done to control gambling spending by players during the coronavirus crisis. The restrictions will remain in effect until the end of 2020.
Initially, the introduction of the limits was announced in April, the measures were supposed to apply to all forms of gambling, starting from June 1st. However, Social Security Minister Ardalan Shekarabi stated that the restriction will only apply to online casinos and will come into force in July.
